Shuttle AV45GT/R Memory FAQ

What does PC1600 and PC2100 mean?

The number is the throughput speed of the memory in megabytes per second. The speed you need depends on what the installed CPU supports. You can also run faster rated memory for future upgrading or overclocking.

Should I go with Unbuffered or Registered memory?

Go with whatever type of memory is currently in your Shuttle AV45GT/R motherboard. Registered memory will have one or more horizontal black chips that are smaller than the memory chips. If no memory is installed, you can go with either type but mixing types is not allowed. Registered memory can give you extra capacity at the expense of extra latency.

What does the CL number mean?

Column Address Strobe (CAS) Latency, or CL for short, specifies how many clock cycles the Shuttle AV45GT/R motherboard must wait before the memory module is ready to deliver the requested memory. The lower the CL number, the faster the access time.

However, the performance difference between CL=2 and CL=3 is so small that you will not notice any degradation in speed. Unless you are overclocking your Shuttle AV45GT/R, you do not need to worry about the CL rating. If you are overclocking, then going with a lower CL may help stabilize your Shuttle AV45GT/R motherboard.
